Washington Capitals: Alex Ovechkin re-signs for 22nd NHL season

Capitals icon Alex Ovechkin re-signs on one-year deal

Alex Ovechkin has signed an incentive-laden deal to return to the Washington Capitals for his 22nd NHL season. The agreement, announced Thursday, allows Ovechkin to continue his career and provides the Capitals with an opportunity to build a contender for the Stanley Cup.

Ovechkin, who will turn 41 on September 17, expressed his enthusiasm for returning, stating, “I’m back!” He also noted his health and love for playing hockey and competing to win. He looks forward to rejoining his teammates to contend for a playoff spot and a chance to win.

Ovechkin’s Continued Impact and Contract Details

The deal includes a salary of $1 million and an additional $8 million in bonuses. Ovechkin will receive a $3.25 million signing bonus, with an additional $4.75 million if he plays 10 games. The contract structure is designed to count $4.25 million against the cap, which could assist the Capitals in assembling a competitive team.

Ovechkin recently scored 32 goals, adding to his career total of 929 goals. He surpassed Wayne Gretzky‘s mark of 894 on April 6, 2025. Including playoffs, Ovechkin now has 1,006 goals. He also holds NHL records for power play goals with 331 and game-winning goals with 141. He has achieved 30 goals in a season 20 times, joining Gordie Howe, Johnny Bucyk, and Teemu Selanne as players who reached that mark at 40 or older.

John Carlson, a teammate for over 16 seasons and a fellow Cup champion, was not surprised by Ovechkin’s decision. Carlson, who recently signed with Tampa Bay, mentioned that he had a gut feeling Ovechkin was not ready to retire. Brandon Duhaime, who played with Ovechkin in Washington for two seasons before joining Toronto, praised Ovechkin’s ability to continue scoring 30-goal seasons at his age.

The Capitals missed the playoffs this spring, but they had qualified 16 times in an 18-year span, including their 2018 Stanley Cup victory where Ovechkin was the playoff MVP. Ovechkin spends his summers in Moscow with his wife, Nastya, and their two children, Sergei and Ilya. The family is expected to settle in Russia after his playing career concludes.

Capitals Roster Changes and Outlook for 2026-27

Ovechkin’s return completes a period of significant roster changes for the Capitals ahead of the 2026-27 regular season. The team has acquired Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, Boone Jenner, and Vincent Desharnais through trades or signings. These additions suggest the Capitals are aiming to improve their performance after finishing outside the playoff picture last season.

Head coach Spencer Carbery is expected to deploy a new-look lineup. The team’s forward lines are projected to feature Pierre-Luc Dubois, Ryan Leonard, and Tuch as a potential first line. Dubois led the Capitals in total assists and primary assists at five-on-five in his 2024-25 campaign. Leonard is anticipated to play on his off-hand side, forming a dangerous, two-way transition-scoring line.

Kyrou is seen as a good fit with Ovechkin and Dylan Strome. While with the Blues last season, Kyrou led his team in offensive-zone start percentage at five-on-five and contributed to strong analytics. His speed could provide a boost to the line, and if he regains his scoring touch, the Capitals could benefit significantly.

The third line could see a reunion of Aliaksei Protas, Ilya Protas, and Tom Wilson, who showed strong performance together in a limited sample last season. The younger Protas is considered part of the team’s center ice group. The fourth line is less certain, with Justin Sourdif potentially moving to center and Jenner capable of switching between wing and center. Anthony Beauvillier is currently penciled in as another winger, with competition expected from several players during training camp.

On defense, Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy formed a strong pairing last season, controlling a high percentage of shot attempts and expected goals during their shared five-on-five ice time. The primary objective is to maintain this effective pairing. Martin Fehervary will need to develop chemistry with a new partner following Carlson’s departure to Tampa Bay. Cole Hutson and Desharnais are seen as an obvious duo, with Desharnais providing defensive support for Hutson’s offensive play. Desharnais also has a history of mentoring younger players, which could benefit the 20-year-old Hutson.

In goal, Logan Thompson is expected to be the primary netminder, having appeared in 58 of 82 games last season. He is anticipated to share playing time with Charlie Lindgren, who is set for another season in Washington despite some trade speculation. Thompson recorded a 2.44 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage last season, leading all goalies in goals saved above expected.

The Capitals’ new additions, combined with Ovechkin’s return, suggest a high ceiling for the team as they aim for a deep playoff run in the 2026-27 season.
