The Boston Celtics have traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and draft capital. This move was reported on Wednesday, with the terms later confirmed. The trade involves Brown, who was recently recognized as the 2024 NBA Finals MVP and a five-time All-Star, moving to a rival team.
The deal includes George, along with draft picks that could potentially amount to two first-round and two second-round selections. One report specified that Philadelphia sent Boston a 2028 first-round pick that could convert to a more favourable swap for Boston, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2030 second-rounder.
Impact on the Celtics and 76ers
Brown’s departure breaks up a successful pairing with Jayson Tatum, who together led the Celtics to the 2024 NBA title. Tatum missed much of the past season while recovering from an Achilles tear that occurred during the 2025 playoffs, which meant Brown took on a larger role for Boston. During this period, Brown achieved career-best averages of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.
The trade ends George’s two-year tenure with the 76ers. George’s time in Philadelphia included a 25-game suspension last season for violating the league’s anti-drug program. He averaged 16.7 points in his two seasons with the 76ers, a decrease from his previous scoring averages.
For the 76ers, Brown joins a roster that includes guard Tyrese Maxey and centre Joel Embiid. Maxey was the league’s fifth-leading scorer last season, and Embiid is a two-time NBA scoring champion. This trio could form a formidable offensive unit for Philadelphia.
The acquisition of Brown is seen as a significant addition for the 76ers, who have been looking to strengthen their forward positions.
