The National Hockey League‘s free agency period has extended beyond its initial day, with a number of prominent players remaining on the open market. This includes individuals who have previously achieved significant success in the league.
Among the players still seeking new contracts is Patrick Kane, a three-time Stanley Cup champion. Kane, who is 37, brings playoff experience and multiple championship rings. Other wingers like Vladimir Tarasenko, a two-time champion, and Anthony Mantha, who is coming off a strong season, are also unsigned. Forward Claude Giroux, 38, is another notable player still available as he pursues a championship.
Player Movements and Contract News
The initial hours of free agency saw over 55 players change teams, with contracts totalling more than $360 million. This figure does not include the acquisition of Bowen Byram by Chicago in a trade with Buffalo. Byram’s new deal makes him a highly compensated defenceman.
The league’s salary cap increased to $104 million, which facilitated some substantial contracts. This also allowed teams to retain key players. For example, New Jersey extended its captain, Nico Hischier, while Florida re-signed center Eetu Luostarinen. Goaltender Dan Vladar was also rewarded with a long-term contract.
New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche indicated that he continues to look for opportunities to improve his team, even after a busy period with the draft and the start of free agency. He noted that the team expects to have over $40 million in cap space next summer.
The Devils made a move by tendering an offer sheet for Utah center Barrett Hayton for $4.775 million. The Mammoth, who acquired Vincent Trocheck in a trade with the Rangers, have a week to either match the offer or receive a second-round draft pick as compensation.
The possibility of an offer sheet remains for Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson, who is in need of a new contract. The Stars recently signed forward Joel Kiviranta to a one-year contract. Kiviranta played 51 games for Colorado last season, recording nine points.
Zach Werenski, a reigning Norris Trophy winner, confirmed his commitment to Columbus, stating he is content with two years remaining on his current deal, despite earlier trade rumours.

Several teams have been active in signing players. The Anaheim Ducks re-signed A.J. Greer and saw Jansen Harkins sign with St. Louis. Petr Mrazek and Noah Philp also moved on, with Philp signing in Sweden and Jacob Trouba joining San Jose. Jeffrey Viel signed with Tampa Bay.
The Boston Bruins re-signed Luke Cavallin. Other players from Boston, such as Viktor Arvidsson, signed with Detroit, and Riley Tufte joined New Jersey. Michael Callahan signed with Tampa Bay.
The Buffalo Sabres re-signed Olen Zellweger. Josh Dunne signed with Washington, and Luke Schenn moved to Vancouver. Zac Jones signed with Utah.
The Calgary Flames re-signed William Stromgren. Justin Kirkland signed with Minnesota, Ryan Lomberg with Columbus, and Victor Olofsson with Vegas. John Beecher signed with Florida.
