France advances to semi-finals after victory over Morocco

France vs. Morocco player ratings: Which player produced a better rating than Mbappe?

France secures semi-final spot

France has advanced to the semi-finals of the World Cup after defeating Morocco. The match saw Kylian Mbappé score his eighth goal of the tournament, helping his team secure the win. This victory marks France‘s sixth consecutive win in the tournament, solidifying their position as a leading contender.

The French side, managed by Didier Deschamps, was described by former England striker Ian Wright as one of the most clear favourites for a World Cup tournament he had ever seen. France‘s intent was evident early in the match, with Mbappé having a 25-yard strike pushed wide by Yassine Bounou, and Dayot Upamecano‘s header from the subsequent corner also saved.

Despite the comfortable victory, there was an early setback for Mbappé. He won a penalty in the first half after being fouled by Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui. However, his spot-kick was saved by Yassine Bounou. Mbappé had to wait an extended period before taking the kick due to a video assistant referee check, which may have contributed to his poorly placed effort.

Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist noted that France definitely deserved the win, highlighting that they had more capabilities in their play. The team’s performance against Morocco, a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final which France also won 2-0, was anticipated to be their most challenging test yet in the tournament.

Mbappé’s crucial contributions and Golden Boot race

Mbappé made amends for his missed penalty in the 60th minute, scoring with a curling effort from just inside the penalty area, giving France a deserved lead. Six minutes later, Ousmane Dembele doubled France‘s advantage with a low shot that found the net, despite Bounou getting a hand to the ball.

Mbappé‘s goal brought him level with Argentina‘s Lionel Messi in the tournament’s scoring charts. He is currently leading the race for the Golden Boot due to having more assists than his former Paris St-Germain teammate. The two players are also engaged in a thrilling contest for the all-time World Cup top scorer title, with Mbappé now on 20 goals, compared to Messi‘s record of 21.

France‘s attacking prowess was evident throughout the match. Before Mbappé‘s penalty, Dembele and Adrien Rabiot had also missed scoring opportunities. After the goals, Desire Doue had a strike saved, and Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne hit the crossbar with a long-range effort, potentially with a slight touch from Bounou.

The only minor concern for France was when Mbappé was substituted in the 77th minute and seen with ice on his right ankle. He was replaced by Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. However, after the game, Mbappé celebrated with his teammates, suggesting the injury was not serious.

Morocco’s performance and France’s next challenge

Morocco, ranked seventh in the world, struggled to create significant chances against France. They registered only one shot on target in the 83rd minute when they were already two goals down. In total, they had five attempts, with four of them off target.

France is now the leading team scorer in the competition, having netted 16 goals in six games. They are widely considered the team to beat in this World Cup. The team’s formation for the match was a 4-2-3-1, mirroring Morocco‘s formation under manager Mohamed Ouahbi.

France, who have won the World Cup in 1998 and 2018, will face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-final. This upcoming match is scheduled to take place in Dallas on Tuesday at 20:00 BST.
