Regina hosts Toronto Argonauts as Roughriders debut new jersey

3 keys to victory for Toronto, Saskatchewan in Week 4

The Toronto Argonauts are set to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium on Friday in a game that sees the Argonauts playing a designated home game on the road. This unique matchup is due to the Argonauts’ home field being utilized for the World Cup, leading to several of their games being relocated. The Roughriders, coming off a 2-0 start to their season, will be looking to continue their strong performance against Toronto, who secured their first win of the season in Week 3.

For the Roughriders, this game is considered a “first home-away game” by players like Jaxon Ford, a Regina native expected to start at safety. While the team benefits from not having to travel during a shorter week, the financial arrangement for the game means the Argonauts will receive most of the profits from ticket and concession sales. Despite generating significant revenue last year, the community-owned Roughriders reported a loss on operations, even after winning the Grey Cup.

Keys to Victory for Toronto

The Argonauts will need to focus on several key areas to secure a victory against the formidable Roughriders. One crucial aspect is managing turnovers. Quarterback Chad Kelly has thrown five interceptions in two games, including four against Ottawa. Against a strong Roughriders offence, minimizing giveaways will be essential, especially since the team’s offence is built around Kelly’s passing.

Another area of focus for Toronto will be pass defence. The Argonauts are tied for the league lead in pass knockdowns with 10. They will need a collective effort from their defensive backs, including DaShaun Amos and Tarvarus McFadden, to contain Roughriders pivot Trevor Harris and his receiving corps. Harris is known as one of the league’s top passers.

Finally, capitalizing on scoring opportunities will be vital. The Argonauts have entered the red zone 11 times, more than any other team, but have converted only six of those into touchdowns. Against the reigning champions, converting every chance into points will be critical for Toronto’s success.

Saskatchewan’s Strategic Approach

The Roughriders’ strategy will revolve around controlling the game’s tempo and leveraging their offensive strengths. A primary key for Saskatchewan is maintaining possession of the ball. The Roughriders lead the league in time of possession and are adept at limiting their opponents’ time with the football. Toronto ranks sixth in both these categories. Extended possession for the Roughriders’ offence can create more scoring opportunities and reduce the chances for Kelly to make big plays.

The Roughriders will also need to adjust their run game due to the absence of running back AJ Ouellette, who will miss the game with an ankle injury. This opens opportunities for Quali Conley, making his Canadian Football League debut, and Thomas Bertrand-Hudon, who has recorded 32 yards on eight carries this season. The team will rely on these players to step up in Ouellette’s absence.

With potential questions in the run game, Harris is expected to spread the field with his trio of receivers: Kian Schaffer-Baker, KeeSean Johnson, and Samuel Emilus. This group has been challenging for opposing defences early in the season, accumulating 665 yards combined. Their ability to stretch the field will be a significant factor in the Roughriders’ offensive strategy.

In addition to the on-field action, the Roughriders will be debuting a special “Prairie Blizzard” uniform for this game. This unique white uniform, created in collaboration with New Era, emphasizes the white in the team’s traditional green and white colours. Fans attending the game will have the opportunity to win game-worn jerseys through a “jerseys off our back” promotion. A limited-edition retail version of the jersey, featuring “RIDER NATION 13” and an individually numbered jock tag, will also be available for purchase, alongside other Prairie Blizzard-inspired merchandise.

The game is scheduled for Friday at 9:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on TSN in Canada, CBSSN in the U.S., and CFL+ internationally.
