As the offseason progresses, several Western Conference teams are reportedly looking to make significant trades to address roster needs. The upcoming NHL Draft and the period leading up to July 1 are expected to be active for general managers, particularly given the current financial environment in the NHL.
The Edmonton Oilers are among the teams seeking to make moves. With Mike Babcock now officially coaching the team, General Manager Stan Bowman is working to reshape the roster. The Oilers have already secured forward Jason Dickinson and defenceman Connor Murphy with five-year contracts, bolstering their depth. However, the team has only 11 forwards signed, suggesting further additions could be made, potentially through free agency.
Edmonton Oilers and Darnell Nurse
A key area of focus for the Oilers is the situation surrounding defenceman Darnell Nurse. Both Nurse and the team are reportedly seeking a fresh start, with Nurse expressing a desire to play in the Eastern U.S. Possible destinations include the Pittsburgh Penguins or the Philadelphia Flyers. Bowman faces the challenge of securing a fair return for Nurse while also attempting to avoid retaining any salary from his contract, which is currently on the books until 2030.
Goaltending remains an ongoing concern for Edmonton. The tenure of Tristan Jarry has not been successful, and Connor Ingram is set to become a free agent. The Oilers may explore options such as St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington or inquire about the availability of Anthony Stolarz from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bowman is expected to make a move to address the team’s goaltending situation.
Minnesota Wild’s Search for a Center
The Minnesota Wild, under General Manager Bill Guerin, are actively pursuing a scoring-line center. Guerin has a reputation for being an aggressive manager, and the team is reportedly interested in Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin. While Minnesota‘s ability to meet Detroit‘s asking price is uncertain, Guerin is expected to explore all avenues to make a deal happen. Reports from Michael Russo and Joe Smith of The Athletic indicate that Wild GM Bill Guerin is in continuous communication with Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman and Larkin‘s agent, Pat Brisson, though the Wild may lack the necessary assets to meet Yzerman‘s demands. A third team might be necessary to facilitate such a trade.
If a deal for Larkin does not materialize, the Wild could potentially resume discussions with the New York Rangers regarding Vincent Trocheck, a player they reportedly came close to acquiring previously. However, the Wild are not pursuing Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish. Key assets that Minnesota might use in trade negotiations include young centers Danila Yurov and Charlie Stramel, along with goaltender Jesper Wallstedt.
Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck
The Winnipeg Jets face challenges in attracting and retaining players, making General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff‘s job particularly demanding. The team is in need of a second-line center to play alongside Mark Scheifele and captain Adam Lowry, as the previous attempt with Jonathan Toews did not yield the desired results. Additionally, the Jets require a middle-six center to support their top players and have a void on the wing and in secondary scoring since Nikolaj Ehlers was not adequately replaced on the second line.
A significant decision for Cheveldayoff involves star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Hellebuyck is reportedly open to a change of scenery, and his availability is notable in a league seeking goaltenders. His contract, with an average annual value of $8.5 million until 2031, could make him a valuable trade asset. The Florida Panthers have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Hellebuyck, but questions remain about their ability to offer sufficient assets, especially after trading three first-round picks for Brady Tkachuk. While Panthers GM Bill Zito reportedly has no interest in moving center Anton Lundell, a deal centered around Lundell and Carter Verhaeghe could be a possibility for the Jets, though it would require agreement from both sides. David Dwork of The Hockey News reported the Florida Panthers are exploring goaltending options, including Hellebuyck, but Murat Ates and Shayna Goldman of The Athletic suggest the Panthers may lack the tradeable assets unless they include Anton Lundell.
The upcoming period is expected to be busy as these Western Conference teams aim to make strategic moves ahead of the July 1 deadline.
