Edmonton Oilers trade Darnell Nurse to San Jose Sharks

Darnell Nurse trade grades: Who won the Sharks and Oilers deal? - Yahoo Sports Canada

The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenceman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Oilers acquired defencemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp from San Jose. The trade follows a period of speculation regarding Nurse’s future with the Oilers.

Nurse, who is 31 years old, played 82 games last season, scoring seven goals and accumulating 24 points. He averaged 20:58 of ice time during the regular season and 23:03 in six playoff games, where the Oilers were eliminated in the first round. He is currently in the fifth season of an eight-year contract with an annual cap hit of $9.25 million, set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2029-30 campaign.

Reports indicate that the Oilers did not retain any salary in the deal. This move provides significant cap relief for Edmonton, which was a key factor in the trade. Nurse was originally drafted seventh overall by the Oilers in the 2013 draft and has recorded 88 goals and 324 points in 798 career games. He contributed to the Oilers’ appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2024 and 2025, tallying five goals and 14 points across those two playoff runs. Nurse has also represented Canada three times at the World Hockey Championship, earning a silver medal in 2019.

Details of the Player Exchange

Shakir Mukhamadullin, a 24-year-old defenceman, played 50 games for the Sharks last season, during which he registered 12 points, with five goals and seven assists, along with 22 penalty minutes and a minus-3 plus/minus rating. Over parts of three seasons with the Sharks, he accumulated 22 points and 34 penalty minutes. Mukhamadullin was initially a first-round selection (20th overall) by the New Jersey Devils in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Zack Sharp, who is 21 years old, recently completed his second season with Western Michigan University (NCAA). During that season, he recorded 19 points, including five goals, and 18 penalty minutes, achieving a plus-15 plus/minus rating over 37 games. Sharp was drafted by the Sharks in the fourth round (124th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft.

Impact on Both Teams

For the Oilers, the trade is seen as a positive move, primarily due to the cap space freed up by not retaining any of Nurse’s contract. While the team may experience a short-term impact on their defensive lineup, the move aligns with Edmonton’s search for a new direction on defense. The deal is considered tidy work by Edmonton, as it addresses their need for cap flexibility.

The Sharks’ acquisition of Nurse, however, has been met with some reservations. The team had signed Jacob Trouba to a substantial deal just hours before the Nurse trade. With both defencemen on the roster, the Sharks will have $17.5 million committed to the two players for the next four years. This financial commitment is noted as significant, even with the anticipated increase in the salary cap. The addition of Nurse is expected to bolster the Sharks’ blue line, but the combined financial outlay is a point of concern for the team’s overall cap structure.

The trade of Darnell Nurse was officially announced on July 1.
