Blue Jays Struggle Offensively
The Toronto Blue Jays were defeated 3-0 by the Chicago White Sox in their recent matchup. For the Blue Jays, Trey Yesavage (4-5) also had a solid start, initially holding the White Sox hitless through three innings. However, in the fourth inning, Colson Montgomery singled, leading to the White Sox‘s first run on Andrew Benintendi‘s sacrifice fly. Montgomery further extended Chicago‘s lead to 2-0 with a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning, which was the first of two runs for Chicago in that frame.
Yesavage pitched six innings, throwing 95 pitches, and allowed three runs on five hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts. Varsho‘s two-out single to centre marked the final hit allowed by Burke. White Sox reliever Grant Taylor earned his fifth save of the season. Benintendi later doubled and scored on Braden Montgomery‘s two-out single to centre, increasing Chicago‘s advantage to 3-0 in the sixth inning.
Team Standings and Upcoming Matchup
The White Sox (52-46) have been in good form, winning five of their last six games, and are currently tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League. In contrast, the Blue Jays (46-53) remain in last place in the AL East.
Before the game, a moment of silence and a scoreboard video tribute were held for Duane Ward, a two-time World Series champion, who passed away at the age of 62 from natural causes while in Toronto for the team’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Canadian rookie outfielder Tristan Peters of Winkler, Man., had four putouts in centre field for the White Sox but struggled at the plate, recording three strikeouts.
Looking ahead, the Blue Jays are scheduled to begin a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are leaders in the AL East. The first game will feature Dylan Cease (6-4) pitching for Toronto against Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Nick Martinez (8-2) on Monday.
