Canadian women’s team secures silver
Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team earned a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, achieving a score of 157.300. This marks the second consecutive day that Canada has reached the podium in gymnastics. The team demonstrated depth, consistency, and resilience across all four apparatus during their performance.
The silver-medal winning team includes Ellie Black, Gabrielle Black, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte. Individually, Fontaine delivered a strong performance on vault, while Ellie Black executed one of the team’s top balance beam routines. Redick showcased a dynamic performance on the floor exercise, and Guerrier-Calixte contributed an important vault score. Gabrielle Black also played a valuable role in the team’s overall performance.
Ellie Black, a women’s all-around finalist, expressed enthusiasm about competing again, noting it was her first all-around competition since returning to the sport. She mentioned that she had recently resumed training on vault and floor. Black also shared her pride in being back in all-around competition, being part of the team, and experiencing the Commonwealth Games once more.
Both Ellie Black and Fontaine advanced to the women’s all-around final following their qualification performances. Black led the standings by qualifying first overall with a score of 53.400, while Fontaine secured her spot in the final in fifth place with a score of 52.050.
Canada’s strength in individual qualifications was evident, with the team securing multiple spots in apparatus finals. Fontaine topped the vault standings with a score of 13.750. Ellie Black advanced to the uneven bars final in second place with a score of 13.850. Both Ellie Black and Fontaine will also represent Canada in the balance beam final, qualifying fifth and sixth respectively, with scores of 12.900 and 12.850. Redick was named second reserve on uneven bars with a score of 12.650.
Dolci claims men’s gymnastics silver
In the men’s gymnastics all-around final on Sunday, Félix Dolci of Laval, Que., secured a silver medal, marking his second medal of the competition. Dolci achieved a score of 79.450, coming within .2 of the gold medallist, Reuben Ward of host Scotland, at the Glasgow International Arena. Jesse Moore of Australia took the bronze medal with a score of 79.000.
Dolci, who is 24, previously helped Canada win gold in the men’s team event on Friday. In that event, he topped the individual standings with a score of 81.650. The men’s team gold and the women’s team silver contribute to Canada’s overall medal count at the Games.
Canadian swimmers compete in finals
Beyond gymnastics, Canadian athletes also competed in swimming events. Oliver Dawson, an 18-year-old from Grand Prairie, Alta., led the Canadian effort in the pool on the second day of the Commonwealth Games. Competing in his first Commonwealth Games, Dawson finished fourth in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke final, missing the podium by .05. He completed the race with a time of 59.70.
Ella Jansen of Burlington, Ont., earned a spot in the finals for the second consecutive night. The athlete from the Etobicoke Swim Club placed eighth in the women’s 200-metre freestyle event, recording a time of 1:59.18. Paralympian Emma Van Dyk, representing Brock Niagara Aquatics, finished seventh in the 200M S14 freestyle event with a time of 2:31.24.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s swimming finals, Kylie Masse of LaSalle, Ont., a five-time Olympic medallist, is set to compete for gold in the women’s 100-metre backstroke. Additionally, Joshua Liendo of Toronto will participate in both the men’s 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle finals.
Canada has accumulated a total of five medals at the Commonwealth Games, comprising one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, heading into Sunday’s swimming finals.
