The National Hockey League (NHL) recently unveiled its full 2026-27 regular-season schedule, prompting many teams to engage in creative social media campaigns to announce their upcoming games. Following a trend seen in other sports leagues, most of the 32 NHL teams utilized video content to share their 84-game schedules with fans.
This upcoming season marks a significant change, as it will be the first time since the 1993-94 season that the league will play 84 regular-season games per team. This expanded schedule will result in a total of 1,344 games across the league, setting a new all-time NHL record for the number of games played in a single season. The 110th NHL season is set to be the longest in over three decades.
Season Highlights and Key Dates
The 2026-27 NHL season is scheduled to begin on September 29, marking only the second time in league history that the season will commence before October. This earlier start, along with the expanded schedule, is part of a new collective bargaining agreement that also includes a reduction in the preseason to just four games.
One of the highly anticipated matchups is the Stanley Cup Final rematch between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights. The Hurricanes are slated to raise their second championship banner before their first game in September. Their first encounter with the Golden Knights, the team they defeated for the Stanley Cup, will take place on December 21 in Las Vegas. The two teams will meet again in Raleigh on January 17.
The league will also host two separate Global Series events for the first time in two years. In November, the Carolina Hurricanes will face the Seattle Kraken in a pair of games in Helsinki, Finland. This marks the Kraken’s first overseas games since their league debut in 2021. The Hurricanes previously played in Europe in October 2010, also in Helsinki. The games between the Hurricanes and Kraken are scheduled for November 12 and November 14.
The second Global Series will occur in December, featuring the Ottawa Senators and the Chicago Blackhawks in Dusseldorf, Germany, at the PSD Bank Dome. The last time an NHL team played in Germany was in September 2024, when the Buffalo Sabres played an exhibition match. The only previous regular-season game in Germany was in October 2011. The Blackhawks have played three regular-season games in Europe, with their most recent appearance in Prague, Czechia, in 2019. The Senators participated in the 2023 Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden. The games in Germany are set for December 18 and December 19.
Special Events and All-Star Weekend
The 19th edition of the NHL Winter Classic is scheduled for New Year’s Eve, with the Colorado Avalanche taking on the Utah Mammoth in Salt Lake City. This marks a significant moment for the Mammoth franchise, which reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time last spring. While the Avalanche have played outdoors before, this will be their first appearance in the Winter Classic. The game will be held at Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah, with a scheduled start time of 6 p.m. ET.
The Heritage Classic will also make a return, with the Winnipeg Jets hosting the Montreal Canadiens at Princess Auto Stadium on October 25. Additionally, the 2027 Stadium Series will feature the Dallas Stars and the Vegas Golden Knights at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, on February 20.
The NHL All-Star Weekend is undergoing a revamp, with the New York Islanders hosting the event at UBS Arena. The skills competition, set for February 5, will exclusively feature players aged 25 and younger. It will include six initial events for 10 competitors, with four advancing to a shootout, and the final two competing in an obstacle course finale for a prize of $1 million.
On February 6, a five-team tournament will take place, where players will represent their countries rather than their divisions. Teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States will participate, alongside a team composed of athletes from other nations. Each team will play four 3-on-3 games, each lasting five minutes. The top two teams from the round robin will then compete in a 10-minute championship game, with the winner also receiving $1 million.
The schedule also includes nights where all 32 teams will be in action. The first 16-game night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, with games starting at 6 p.m. ET. The final day of the season, April 10, will also feature all 32 teams playing, with games beginning at noon ET.
