Third-Place Match Significance
The upcoming World Cup third-place match between France and England, while not the final, carries considerable stakes for the participating teams. The winner will be awarded a bronze medal and a significant financial prize. This year’s tournament features a record $655 million prize fund, marking a 50 percent increase from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Even teams that do not advance past the group stage receive $9 million for their participation. In the 2022 tournament, Argentina earned $42 million for their victory, while Croatia secured $27 million for their third-place finish against Morocco.
For the 2026 World Cup, the prize money breakdown includes $50 million for the champion, $33 million for the runner-up, $29 million for the third-place team, and $27 million for the fourth-place team. Teams finishing between fifth and eighth place, such as Switzerland, Norway, Belgium, and Morocco, will each receive $19 million. Those placing from ninth to sixteenth, including Canada, Paraguay, United States, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Egypt, are set to earn $15 million each. Nations ranked from seventeenth to thirty-second, which include South Africa, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Senegal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Croatia, Japan, Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, DR Congo, Algeria, Ghana, Australia, and Cape Verde, will each receive $11 million. Finally, teams in the thirty-third to forty-eighth positions, such as South Korea, Czechia, Qatar, Scotland, Haiti, Turkey, Curaçao, Tunisia, Iran, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Panama, will each receive $9 million.
Critique of Dismissive Attitudes
The significance of the third-place match has been a point of contention, particularly following comments from Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel expressed a lack of enthusiasm for the match, stating that neither the English nor the French players were interested in it, having aimed for the final instead. He remarked, “None of our players and none of the French players want to play this match. They want to play the final. We gave everything to achieve that.”
This perspective drew criticism from Croatia legend Davor Suker, who led his national team to a bronze medal at France 98. Suker, speaking to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, countered Tuchel’s view, suggesting that such dismissiveness comes from an elite mentality. He stated, “I think the rich don’t want to play when they lose.”
Suker emphasized the importance of humility and respect for all 211 participating nations in the global football community. He argued that some individuals, having accumulated many trophies and wealth, might view the third-place match as insignificant. Suker’s message to them was to “be quiet, to respect all 211 participants, and to understand that the world doesn’t belong only to them. The world also belongs to the medium-sized nations, the small ones, and those who simply enjoy football.”
Enduring Value of a Bronze Medal
Suker firmly believes that the bronze medal holds lasting value, regardless of any initial disappointment from not reaching the final. He recalled his own experience from 1998, stating, “After 1998 and the game against the Netherlands, we fought for third place, and today I can speak about it with pride.”
He assured that the team securing third place on Saturday would come to appreciate their achievement over time. “Whoever wins third place, I assure you that in 20 years, when they are older, they will certainly remember that bronze medal,” Suker added, dismissing Tuchel’s comments as “nonsense.”
Looking ahead to the final, Suker also shared his prediction for the World Cup final in New Jersey. He suggested that Lionel Messi and Argentina have a better chance at securing a second consecutive global title against Spain. He noted, “We have 90 minutes ahead of us, and maybe extra time too. But when you look at who has the better chances, it’s Messi again. We’ll see, it will be interesting right down to the last second.”
