Papaioannou placed fifth in the voting for the John Brophy Award, recognizing the ECHL Coach of the Year.

Prior to his tenure with the Wheeling Nailers, Papaioannou spent 16 seasons as head coach and general manager of the Brooks Bandits. His time with the Bandits spanned both the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the British Columbia Hockey League. During his 16 years with Brooks, Papaioannou accumulated a record of 907-217-48. He led the team to at least 50 wins in a season on six occasions and was named coach of the year three times in the AJHL.
