Fan Shane Holstein expressed that while the ceremony was meaningful, he felt more could have been done to share Rajyaguru’s story. In contrast, Dalke’s tribute featured individuals who knew him through football.
Other fans, like Richard Blackburn and his sister Euphemie Blackburn, believed the Roughriders handled the tribute appropriately given the circumstances. Details of the Collision
According to the RCMP, Rajyaguru, 22, was driving a black SUV when it collided with a silver SUV driven by Dalke, 30. Police allege that Dalke’s SUV contained evidence of alcohol and cannabis and was travelling north in the southbound lanes of Highway 11 when the crash occurred. Both men died at the scene of the collision.
Rajyaguru, originally from Gujarat, India, came to Canada in 2022 as an international student. A fundraising campaign was organized to facilitate the return of his remains to his family, describing him as a kind friend, talented musician, and a source of joy. The campaign successfully reached its fundraising goal on Tuesday.
Dalke, 30, from Leduc, near Edmonton, joined the University of Alberta Golden Bears in 2019 and was named All-Canadian for the 2019 season. The Roughriders selected him in the sixth round of the Canadian Football League (CFL) 2022 draft, and he signed with the team in May 2022. He played 17 regular-season games for the Riders last year and participated in the Grey Cup.
The Dalke family released a statement expressing their deep love for Jayden and gratitude for the support received. They requested donations to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation in his memory instead of flowers or gifts. The family also extended their condolences to Bhishma Rajyaguru’s family and requested privacy during their grieving process.
On-Field Tributes
The tributes continued on the field during the game. The Riders placed a helmet bearing Dalke’s initials behind the team’s bench. For their first punt, Saskatchewan lined up with only 11 players, intentionally leaving the position typically occupied by Dalke vacant. Although the Riders received a time-count violation for this, Edmonton declined the penalty.
Despite the game ending in a loss for the Riders, with Vincent Blanchard kicking a 57-yard field goal in the final seconds for the Elks, the final score became secondary for many in attendance. The lasting image for many was the stadium uniting to remember the two lives lost.
