Berhalter’s Move to England
The Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday the transfer of midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to Middlesbrough FC, an English Championship side. The 25-year-old American midfielder departs Vancouver after four and a half seasons with the club. As part of the agreement, the Whitecaps will retain a sell-on percentage for any future transfer involving Berhalter. One report indicated a transfer fee of US$2 million.
Axel Schuster, the Whitecaps FC sporting director, noted that Berhalter’s development and consistent performances naturally attracted interest from several clubs. Schuster stated that discussions with Berhalter and his representatives had been ongoing, with a clear understanding that if a suitable opportunity to move to Europe arose, he would want to pursue it.
Berhalter expressed his gratitude to the fans, staff, coaches, management, and teammates, stating that Vancouver had been his home for the past four and a half years. He added that the memories and relationships built during his time with the club would last a lifetime, and he was proud of the club’s growth. He also mentioned that he would always consider himself a Whitecap.
Impact and Achievements with Whitecaps FC
Berhalter joined the Whitecaps in February 2022 at the age of 20, arriving from Columbus Crew. The initial acquisition involved $50,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM) and up to $50,000 in conditional GAM.
During his tenure, Berhalter made 167 appearances across all competitions, including 112 starts. He recorded 20 goals and 34 assists, placing him second in the club’s MLS era for assists and fifth for appearances. He contributed to the Whitecaps winning four consecutive TELUS Canadian Championship titles (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), reaching the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup Final, and securing the 2025 MLS Western Conference Championship.
Individually, Berhalter received several accolades. He was named to the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup Best XI and the 2025 MLS Best XI. He was also selected for the MLS All-Star team in both 2025 and 2026. Furthermore, he earned the club’s 2024 Humanitarian of the Year, 2024 Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero, and 2025 Whitecaps FC Player of the Year awards.
International Recognition and Future Plans
Berhalter’s performances at the club level led to his first call-up to the United States men’s national team ahead of last summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup. He registered two assists and helped his country reach the final of that tournament. He later scored his first international goal in a 5-1 victory over Uruguay in November.
He earned a spot on the host nation United States roster for this summer’s FIFA World Cup 2026™. During the tournament, he became the first MLS player to record both a goal and an assist in a World Cup match, achieving this against Türkiye in a group stage match that ended in a 3-2 loss for the United States. Berhalter had also been named to the MLS All-Star roster for Wednesday’s game against Liga MX in Charlotte.
The Whitecaps (10-3-3) are scheduled to resume MLS play on Saturday when they host Los Angeles FC in a match-up of the top two teams in the Western Conference.
Schuster affirmed that the club has been preparing for this possibility and will use available resources to strengthen the squad in key areas, focusing on building a balanced and competitive roster to pursue more trophies.
