The Toronto Argonauts are set to play their first home game of the season at BMO Field on Thursday, August 6, against the Calgary Stampeders. This marks a return to a more traditional schedule for the team after nearly three months of extensive travel and a temporary practice setup due to the World Cup occupying their home stadium.
Linebacker Adarius Pickett described the beginning of the 2026 campaign as an “extreme challenge.” The team conducted training camp and practices in Guelph, Ontario, located 88 km from their usual practice site. They also played seven consecutive games on the road to start the season. This period involved significant travel, with players often returning from games in the early morning hours.
Challenges of Extensive Travel
The travel demands included approximately 21,000 km of air travel for six away games, in addition to 135 km by bus for a game in Hamilton. Some of these road games saw the Argonauts designated as the ‘home’ team. While some players stayed in Guelph, others, like Pickett, maintained their residences in Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area, leading to daily commutes of at least two hours to and from Guelph.
Pickett, who lives in Mississauga, noted the difficulty of these commutes, especially after long days. He expressed relief at returning to BMO Field, which is approximately 17 minutes from his home. Despite these challenges, the Argonauts hold a 3-4 record, placing them second in the Montreal Alouettes-dominated East Division.
The Argonauts are coming off a bye week, which Pickett stated was a “blessing” for recovery. Quarterback Chad Kelly, who sustained a neck injury in their last game against the B.C. Lions, has returned to practice and is expected to start against the Stampeders.
Upcoming Matchup with Calgary
The Stampeders, with a 4-4 record, enter the game having won two consecutive matches. They lead the CFL in scoring, averaging 40.3 points per game and accumulating 34 offensive touchdowns. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has a 21-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and running back Dedrick Mills is second in the league in rushing yards.
Calgary’s offense has been particularly effective in the red zone, converting 25 touchdowns on 31 trips (80.6 per cent). The Argonauts’ defense, however, has shown strength in this area, allowing only 13 touchdowns on 23 opponent trips (56.5 per cent), which is the third-best mark in the CFL.
The Stampeders previously defeated the Argonauts 58-36 in Week 5. This week, Calgary faces a short turnaround, having played in Hamilton last Saturday before remaining in southern Ontario for Thursday’s game in Toronto. The Argonauts, meanwhile, will play their first home game at BMO Field this season, where they have a 30-13 record over the past five seasons.
Other Week 10 Matchups
In other Week 10 action, the Ottawa Redblacks (0-7) will face the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-2) on Friday, August 7. The Redblacks have made recent changes, including firing defensive coordinator William Fields and releasing receiver Eugene Lewis, after an 0-7 start to the season.
Saturday, August 8, features a matchup between the Edmonton Elks (6-2) and the Montreal Alouettes (7-1), marking the second meeting between these division leaders this year. The Elks previously handed the Alouettes their only loss, a 32-29 overtime victory in Week 3. Also on Saturday, the B.C. Lions (2-5) will host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-5). Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke, the 2025 CFL most outstanding player, is anticipated to return from a shoulder injury for this game.
