Canadian Women’s Team Performance
Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team earned a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, achieving a score of 157.300. This marked the second consecutive day that Canada reached the podium in gymnastics. The team demonstrated its capabilities across all four apparatus, contributing to their medal win.
The silver-medal winning team included Ellie Black, Gabrielle Black, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte. Each member contributed to the team’s overall performance. Fontaine notably led Canada on vault with a strong showing, while Ellie Black performed one of the team’s best balance beam routines. Redick showcased a dynamic performance on the floor exercise, and Guerrier-Calixte provided an important vault score. Gabrielle Black also made a valuable contribution to the team’s efforts.
Ellie Black expressed her excitement about returning to competition, stating she was proud to be competing all-around with the team and experiencing the Commonwealth Games again. She noted that it was her first all-around competition since her return, and she had only recently resumed training for vault and floor, indicating those events were still developing.
Individual Qualifications and Finals
The individual qualification rounds highlighted Canada’s depth, with several gymnasts securing spots in apparatus finals. Ellie Black and Fontaine both advanced to the women’s all-around final after strong qualification performances. Black qualified first overall with a score of 53.400, and Fontaine secured her place in the final in fifth position with a score of 52.050.
In individual apparatus qualifications, Fontaine topped the vault standings with a score of 13.750. Ellie Black advanced to the uneven bars final in second place, achieving a score of 13.850. Both Ellie Black and Fontaine will also represent Canada in the balance beam final, qualifying fifth and sixth respectively, with scores of 12.900 and 12.850. Redick was named as a second reserve on uneven bars with a score of 12.650.
Canadian Success in Other Sports
Beyond artistic gymnastics, Canadian athletes have achieved success in other events at the Commonwealth Games. On Friday, the Canadian men’s artistic gymnastics team secured a gold medal with a score of 241.400, marking the country’s first Commonwealth gymnastics team title in 20 years. The men’s team included Félix Dolci, William Émard, Ethan Ikeda, Jordan Carroll, and René Cournoyer. Dolci led the individual standings with 81.650 points.
In Para swimming, Mary Jibb and Jack Gill earned Canada’s first medals in the sport at the Games. Jibb finished third in the women’s 200-metre individual medley SM10, and Gill added a second Para swimming bronze in the men’s 100-metre butterfly S10 final. Gill, competing in his first Commonwealth Games, expressed happiness with his performance.
In swimming, Oliver Dawson from Grand Prairie, Alta., finished fourth in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke final, missing the podium by .05 seconds with a time of 59.70. Ella Jansen of Burlington, Ont., placed eighth in the women’s 200-metre freestyle with a time of 1:59.18. Paralympian Emma Van Dyk finished seventh in the 200M S14 freestyle event, clocking a time of 2:31.24.
Canada’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball teams also started strong, with the women’s team defeating South Africa 19-3 and the men’s team winning against Kenya 16-3 in their opening preliminary games. Élodie Tessier scored 10 points and had four rebounds for the women’s team, while Reed Michael De’aeth led the men’s team with eight points and 11 rebounds. Both teams are scheduled to compete against their English counterparts on Sunday. The Commonwealth Games are set to continue through August 2.
