“Webb spent his life transforming what was just a sideline school activity into one of the fastest growing sports in the world with his passion, leadership and endless determination,” stated the International Cheer Union in a tribute to Jeff Webb, who passed away at the age of 76 following an accident.
Webb, known as the father of modern cheerleading, founded Varsity Spirit in 1974, originally as the Universal Cheerleading Association. His vision and entrepreneurial spirit propelled cheerleading from a local pastime into a global phenomenon, inspiring young people across continents.
Just two weeks before his death, Webb suffered a head injury during a game of pickleball, which ultimately led to his removal from life support. This tragic turn of events has left a significant void in the cheerleading community.
His influence extended beyond cheerleading as he was also a mentor to prominent figures like Charlie Kirk and played a crucial role in the conservative movement. Webb’s leadership was instrumental in the International Olympic Committee granting provisional recognition to cheerleading in July 2021.
Despite his successes, Webb’s tenure was not without controversy. He faced legal scrutiny over alleged antitrust violations and sexual abuse cases within cheerleading, which cast a shadow over his legacy.
In 2011, Webb sold Varsity Spirit to Herff Jones, becoming the CEO and president of the combined entity. His financial acumen was evident when Varsity was acquired by Charlesbank Capital Partners for $1.5 billion in 2014, from which he reportedly made $34.8 million.
Webb officially cut all ties with Varsity in December 2020, stating, “I’m leaving Varsity Spirit, but I’m not leaving cheerleading.” This declaration underscored his enduring commitment to the sport he helped elevate.
José Perurena, President of the International World Games Association, remarked, “Jeff Webb was a remarkable innovator and a true pioneer of his sport. His vision helped elevate cheerleading from a local activity into a worldwide movement.”
As the cheerleading community mourns his loss, the impact of Webb’s contributions will be felt for generations. His legacy is one of transformation, passion, and a relentless drive to elevate cheerleading to new heights.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full circumstances surrounding his passing, but the outpouring of tributes reflects the profound respect and admiration he garnered throughout his life.
