Prime Video and Rogers Communications have announced a 12-year agreement that will make Prime Video the exclusive Canadian broadcaster for national regular-season NHL games on Wednesday nights. This partnership, which includes both English and French language broadcasts, is set to begin with the 2026-2027 season.
Under the terms of this agreement, Prime Video will also hold exclusive rights to certain Stanley Cup Playoff series in Canada. This includes two First Round playoff series and one Second Round series each year. The comprehensive lineup will feature at least 26 national regular-season NHL games annually, with the first broadcast scheduled for Wednesday, September 30. These games will be available to Prime members in Canada at no additional cost.
Expanding NHL Coverage in Canada
Tony Staffieri, President and CEO of Rogers, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating that the partnership builds upon a strong existing foundation. He emphasized that it reinforces NHL hockey as a highly valuable sports content in Canada. Rogers, as a key provider of hockey content in the country, is dedicated to connecting more fans with more NHL hockey and delivering more national games with fewer blackouts on Sportsnet.
Jay Marine, Head of Global Sports at Prime Video, expressed enthusiasm for expanding the partnership with the NHL and Rogers. He noted that this landmark agreement brings additional premium live sports content to Prime members in Canada, enhancing the value of a Prime membership when combined with other offerings like original series, movies, and expedited shipping.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also commented on the deepened relationship between Prime Video and Rogers. He acknowledged Prime Video’s valuable contribution to the NHL’s media presence in Canada over the past two years, working alongside Rogers to bring marquee NHL games to Canadian fans. This long-term agreement reflects a shared commitment to serving both English and French-language hockey fans across Canada with premium NHL content for many years.
Details of the Broadcast Agreement
The 12-year sublicensing agreement for NHL rights in Canada ensures that Prime Video will be the exclusive destination for Wednesday night hockey. The deal is part of a broader 12-year agreement between Rogers and the NHL for national media rights to NHL games across all platforms in Canada, covering the seasons from 2026-27 through 2037-38.
NHL on Prime is expected to continue delivering high-quality production and innovation, featuring an on-air team that provides in-depth analysis and play-by-play commentary. Further details regarding talent and production aspects will be announced at a later date. This initiative aims to enhance the viewing experience for hockey enthusiasts nationwide.
While Prime Video secures exclusive rights to Wednesday night games and select playoff series, Sportsnet retains exclusive English-language rights to more than 500 national NHL games per season. This includes games on Monday and Saturday nights, as well as the majority of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the exception of the series sublicensed to Prime Video. Sportsnet is committed to providing more national games and reducing blackouts for hockey fans.
The first Wednesday Night Hockey broadcast on Prime Video is scheduled to take place on September 30.
