This winter storm is notable for its unusually high moisture levels and the potential for severe travel disruptions in early May. A powerful late-season winter storm is expected to hit the Sierra Nevada, bringing heavy snow and windy conditions through Tuesday.

Key impacts:

The storm is anticipated to deliver up to 4 feet of snow on the tallest peaks.

Wind gusts may reach 70 MPH along the Sierra crest, with localized gusts potentially reaching 80 MPH.

Travel conditions are becoming hazardous on major routes such as I-80 over Donner Pass and Highway 50.

The National Weather Service warns that chain requirements will likely begin for most vehicles at elevations above 5,000 feet. Snow levels are forecast to drop from around 7,000 feet to as low as 4,500 feet. Visibility will be drastically reduced during the heaviest snowfall periods, which will occur from Sunday night through Tuesday morning.

A significant concern is the potential for blizzard conditions. Meteorologists expect heavy snowfall—between 1-2 feet—above 6,000 feet. Authorities stress that this winter storm is not typical for May and could pose serious risks for unprepared drivers.

Travel advisories:

I-80 and Highway 50 face multi-hour closures from Sunday night into Monday.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle—this advice comes directly from the National Weather Service.

The most dangerous period of the storm is expected from Sunday night through Tuesday morning.

This late-season winter storm underscores a rare occurrence—late-season storms can happen but are not common. The combination of high moisture levels and strong Pacific dynamics may be behind this unusual weather pattern. As the situation develops, officials continue to monitor conditions closely.

A severe winter storm warning has been issued for the Sierra Nevada, resulting in hazardous driving conditions and significant disruptions across the region. As heavy snowfall blankets the area, authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

The California Highway Patrol reported multiple accidents on major routes, including Interstate 80 in Nevada County, where drivers have been caught off guard by the slippery conditions. “Been doing this all morning. Cars sliding off, drivers underestimating conditions, and tow straps getting a full workout,” a CHP spokesperson remarked, highlighting the severity of the situation.

According to the National Weather Service, snow levels in the Sierra range from 3500 to 4000 feet, with Palisades Tahoe recording over a foot of new snow overnight and Mammoth Mountain officials reporting 18 inches. These figures indicate a significant accumulation that is expected to worsen as the storm continues.

Chain controls have been implemented in the Sierra amid these wet conditions, further complicating travel for those who must venture into the mountains. The National Weather Service has strongly discouraged mountain travel, emphasizing the risks associated with the current weather patterns.

Heavy snowfall has already created dangerous driving conditions, with authorities advising drivers to slow down and ensure they are properly equipped for winter conditions. The storm is anticipated to persist, with further snowfall likely to exacerbate the already hazardous road conditions. “The storm is expected to continue affecting travel across the Sierra Nevada, with further snowfall likely to worsen already hazardous road conditions,” officials stated.

As the situation develops, the focus remains on ensuring safety for all travelers in the region. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather and road conditions, ready to respond as necessary to protect the public.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the total impact of this winter storm, but the current forecasts suggest that travel disruptions will persist as the storm continues to unfold. Residents and travelers are advised to stay updated on the latest weather alerts and road conditions.

Calgary is grappling with the effects of heavy snowfall, prompting police advisories and a surge in road accidents. The storm is not over yet.

The post Calgary Snowfall: A Winter Storm’s Impact on the City appeared first on News Canada.

Reaction from the field

The recent Calgary snowfall has had a profound impact on the city, leading to significant disruptions in daily life and travel. With snowfall rates reaching between 3 to 5 cm per hour, the accumulation quickly became unmanageable, prompting Calgary police to advise motorists against travel due to hazardous winter road conditions. The storm’s intensity has not only affected transportation but has also raised concerns about public safety.

By the end of the storm, Calgary airport recorded approximately 16 cm of snow, highlighting the severity of the weather event. This heavy snowfall resulted in a staggering total of 159 crashes across the city, with 27 of those incidents leading to injuries. Such statistics underscore the dangerous conditions that drivers faced during this winter storm.

Environment Canada had issued a snowfall advisory for Calgary, indicating that residents should prepare for severe weather. According to meteorologist Terri Lang, “I think the intensity is what really sets it off,” emphasizing that the rapid accumulation of snow can catch many off guard. This storm is particularly notable as March is statistically the snowiest month for Calgary, with April following closely behind.

Interestingly, the storm’s effects were not uniform across the city. The heaviest snowfall was reported in the northern parts of Calgary, while the southern areas remained relatively dry. This disparity in snowfall has led to varied experiences for residents, with some facing treacherous conditions while others enjoyed milder weather.

Looking ahead, another storm system is forecasted to bring an additional 5 to 8 cm of snow by Thursday morning, suggesting that the challenges posed by winter weather are far from over. As Terri Lang noted, “Folks shouldn’t be surprised to see snow in March, because it is the snowiest month, and we’re not out of the woods yet in terms of the possibility of snow coming.” This statement serves as a reminder that Calgary’s winter weather can be unpredictable and often severe.

Residents have expressed their surprise at the sudden shift in weather, with one individual, Jabier Abusdos, commenting, “The couple of past days were so nice… I was like what is going on?” This sentiment reflects the abrupt transition from pleasant weather to harsh winter conditions, a hallmark of Calgary’s climate.

As the city continues to navigate the aftermath of this snowfall, the focus will be on ensuring public safety and managing road conditions. The combination of heavy snow and the potential for further accumulation raises questions about the city’s preparedness and response to such weather events. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact, but the current situation calls for caution and awareness among residents.

The wider picture

The winter storm is expected to bring the most significant snowfall of the year to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. With forecasts predicting between 20 to 40 centimeters of snow, local authorities are preparing for the impact of this severe weather event. Thierry Dupont, a meteorologist, stated, “C’est une tempête hivernale qui nous arrive dessus dans la nuit de lundi à mardi,” indicating that the storm will arrive overnight from Monday to Tuesday.

As the storm approaches, schools and public administrations in the region will be closed on March 24 to ensure the safety of residents. The storm is being driven by a depression centered south of Nova Scotia, which is moving towards Newfoundland. This meteorological situation is expected to create hazardous conditions, including wind gusts that may reach up to 50 knots (approximately 100 km/h).

Dupont elaborated on the expected snowfall, saying, “On attend entre 20 et 40 centimètres sur cet épisode, avec une moyenne d’environ 30 centimètres.” This level of snowfall could disrupt transportation and daily activities, prompting officials to take precautionary measures. Residents are advised to stay indoors and prepare for potential power outages due to the high winds.

In the context of the energy sector, the storm’s timing coincides with rising natural gas prices, which have positively impacted the stock of EQT Corporation. Over the last 30 days, EQT’s stock has increased by approximately 12%. This surge is attributed to the company’s strong financial performance, including a reported free cash flow of nearly $750 million in the fourth quarter, exceeding consensus estimates by about $200 million.

EQT’s CEO, Toby Rice, expressed optimism about the company’s future, stating, “2025 était ‘une autre année exceptionnelle pour EQT.'” With an adjusted EBITDA projected to be around $6.5 billion for 2026, the company appears well-positioned to navigate the challenges posed by fluctuating weather conditions and energy demands.

As the storm unfolds, observers are closely monitoring its impact on both local communities and the broader energy market. The combination of heavy snowfall and high winds could lead to significant challenges for Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, particularly in terms of transportation and public safety.

Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for the storm’s effects. With the potential for severe weather, the situation remains fluid, and details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact.

As a winter storm disrupts East Kootenay, the region's flood resilience efforts are put to the test. Are communities ready for the challenges ahead?

What the data shows

As a winter storm currently affects much of East Kootenay, British Columbia, the pressing question arises: are the communities in this region adequately prepared for potential flooding? The answer, bolstered by recent infrastructure upgrades, appears to be a cautious yes. However, the ongoing storm challenges the effectiveness of these measures.

Recent reports indicate that the storm has led to school closures across the metro area, with some institutions shutting down for the entire day. Government and city offices have also been forced to close, highlighting the immediate impact of severe weather on daily life. These disruptions serve as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by communities in the face of climate-related events.

In response to these challenges, significant investments have been made to enhance flood resilience in the East Kootenay region. Notably, the Mountview dike and Coal Creek bin wall upgrades in Fernie have been completed, aimed at strengthening the community’s defenses against flooding. As Nic Milligan, a local official, stated, “The recent completion of the upgrades to the Mountview dike and Coal Creek bin wall marks another important step in strengthening Fernie’s flood resilience.” Such projects are crucial as they directly address the risks posed by climate change.

Further bolstering flood defenses, the Toby Creek dike has been raised to a one-in-200-year safety measure in Invermere, while the Kootenay River dike upgrades in Canal Flats enhance protection from high-water events. The Kicking Horse River dike project in Golden also significantly increases flood protection, showcasing a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the region. As Randene Neill pointed out, “When a community is hit by a flood, the effects are felt not just locally, but across B.C.” This interconnectedness underscores the importance of regional resilience efforts.

In addition to these local initiatives, broader discussions are taking place at the governmental level. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith regarding an export pipeline, which includes provisions for environmental impact assessments and methane equivalency agreements. This agreement is part of a larger strategy to manage climate impacts while fostering economic growth.

Alberta’s premier anticipates foreign investment in the new oil pipeline project, with expectations of a 15-30% stake from international companies. This project, known as the Pathways project, aims to capture emissions from 20 oilsands facilities and transport them over 400 kilometers to a terminal near Cold Lake, Alberta. Such initiatives reflect a dual focus on economic development and environmental responsibility, although the long-term implications for flood resilience remain to be fully understood.

As the winter storm continues to unfold, the effectiveness of the flood resilience measures in place will be tested. The community’s safety and well-being remain a top priority, as emphasized by Al Miller, who stated, “The safety and well-being of our community and citizens is our top priority.” While the investments made thus far are promising, the true measure of their success will depend on how well they hold up against the current weather challenges.

Looking ahead, the situation remains fluid. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the storm’s long-term impact on flood resilience efforts, but the ongoing developments will undoubtedly shape the future of community preparedness in East Kootenay. As the region grapples with the effects of climate change, the need for robust infrastructure and proactive measures has never been more critical.

Many Newfoundlanders are eager to know when the first signs of spring will appear after a long winter. However, the recent winter storm has brought significant disruptions to the Metro region, with schools and government offices closed for the morning.

According to reports, approximately 15 cm of snow fell at St. John’s International overnight, and another 10 cm is expected before the weather changes to rain. As a result, both Metrobus and GoBus services are off the road for the morning, leaving many commuters stranded.

Road conditions are described as messy, with travel not recommended in many areas. This has raised concerns among local residents, who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring. Jim Prime, a local resident, expressed the frustration many feel, stating, “I do get questioned ‘when is the spring coming?’ and you know, I never want to answer that this time of year, because things can fluctuate so much.”

In addition to the weather-related disruptions, an employee with the Town of Paradise was injured in a work-related accident, prompting the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) to turn the case over to Occupational Health and Safety for further investigation.

The storm’s impact extends beyond immediate safety concerns, as fuel prices have also surged. Gas prices increased by 7.9 cents per litre this morning, while diesel prices jumped by 12.2 cents. Additionally, furnace oil prices rose by about 10.5 cents per litre, and stove oil prices increased by less than 11 cents per litre.

As the storm continues to affect daily life in the Metro region, officials are closely monitoring the situation. Observers are left wondering how long these winter conditions will persist and when residents can expect a return to normalcy.

With the forecast indicating more snow and fluctuating temperatures, the community remains on alert. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term impact of this winter storm on local infrastructure and services.

As the situation develops, VOCM News will continue to provide updates on the storm’s impact and any changes in weather conditions.

As winter continues to exert its influence across Canada, residents in the Greater Toronto Area and Sudbury are bracing for severe weather conditions. A winter storm warning has been issued, with significant impacts expected from Sunday through Tuesday morning.

Environment Canada has warned that strong winds will affect the region, with gusts reaching up to 70 kilometres per hour initially, escalating to 90 kilometres per hour as the winds shift from southwesterly to westerly on Monday. The agency advises residents to avoid travel if possible, as power outages may occur due to these high winds.

In Sudbury, a rain warning is currently in effect, predicting 25 to 50 mm of rainfall. This precipitation is expected to begin as freezing rain before transitioning to rain as temperatures rise above freezing. Residents should be prepared for water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas, which could create hazardous conditions.

Additionally, an orange alert winter storm warning is in effect for central Ontario communities, including Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, and Kapuskasing. These areas are forecasted to receive between 10 to 20 cm of snowfall and ice pellets, further complicating travel and safety.

The strongest wind gusts are anticipated to coincide with a cold front passage on Monday morning, heightening the risk of damage and disruption. Much of central, eastern, and southern Ontario is expected to experience a patchy, wintry mix, which could lead to further travel advisories and safety concerns.

As the storm develops, local authorities are urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact, but the situation is being closely monitored.

With winter’s icy grip continuing to affect various regions, residents are reminded to remain vigilant and prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
