High Park will host its inaugural Spring Fest on May 2 and 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., celebrating the beauty of cherry blossoms through music, art, and community activities.

Typically, the cherry blossoms peak between mid-April and mid-May, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year. The park has closed its roads to vehicles during this delicate bloom period to protect the fragile flowers.

This year’s Spring Fest promises an array of engaging activities. Guests can participate in waltz dancing lessons and haiku readings — a nod to the artistic spirit that accompanies nature’s beauty.

Byron Zhou, a local resident, expressed his excitement: “It just feels like spring.” The festival aims to foster community engagement while ensuring that nature remains undisturbed.

Rohith Rao, a member of the Turtle Protectors group, emphasized the importance of preserving the park’s ecosystem: “You want to leave them for the birds and wildlife to enjoy because this is also their home.” This sentiment echoes a broader responsibility shared by visitors.

As cherry blossoms bloom, baby turtles emerge from nests on the same hill each spring — a reminder of the interconnectedness of life in High Park. Carolynne Crawley noted, “Everybody’s busy looking up,” highlighting how these blossoms captivate attention.

The event will be held near the historic Colborne Lodge Museum, enriching the experience with educational opportunities about the park’s natural history. It reflects an ongoing commitment to community programming that resonates with both locals and newcomers.

Looking ahead, officials anticipate that Spring Fest will become an annual tradition — a celebration that not only showcases nature but also strengthens community bonds.
