The retail travel industry previously worried about a labour shortage with experienced travel advisors retiring and fewer new entrants. However, recent developments indicate a significant shift in this narrative. According to LinkedIn’s “Jobs on the Rise” list, the role of Travel Advisor is now one of the fastest-growing jobs, signaling a renewed interest in the profession. This uptick is further supported by the Canadian vacation spending projections, which are expected to reach a staggering $47.6 billion by 2026, marking a 22% increase year over year.

In response to this evolving landscape, organizations like the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) have taken proactive measures. ACTA’s Travel Advisor Essentials (TAE) course aims to equip new travel advisors with foundational knowledge, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of a burgeoning market. Suzanne Acton-Gervais from ACTA emphasizes, “From ACTA’s perspective, attracting the next generation of travel advisors while also supporting and retaining experienced professionals across all generations is a key priority for the long-term sustainability of the industry.” This commitment to education and support is crucial as the industry adapts to changing consumer needs.

Moreover, Trevello Travel Group is making significant strides in this area, supporting 1,287 independent advisors across Canada, with 70% of them being newcomers to the industry. The group’s annual growth rate is approximately 20%, reflecting the increasing demand for travel services and the vital role that new advisors play in fulfilling this demand. Zeina Gedeon, a representative from Trevello, notes, “The more important story are the advisors that stay,” highlighting the importance of retention in a rapidly evolving market.

The wider picture

In addition to the rise in new advisors, partnerships within the industry are also evolving. Hopper, a travel technology company, has recently signed a long-term deal with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to power the Avion Rewards Travel program. This partnership is indicative of a broader trend where B2B collaborations now account for more than 90% of Hopper’s revenue, which reportedly exceeds $500 million annually. Dakota Smith from Hopper remarked, “The interesting part comes next as we move towards launch and to providing real value to RBC customers and Canadian travellers,” suggesting that such partnerships will enhance the travel experience for consumers.

The convergence of these factors—an increase in new travel advisors, record vacation spending, and strategic partnerships—paints a promising picture for the future of the travel industry. Observers are optimistic that as the market continues to grow, the influx of new talent will bring fresh perspectives and innovation to travel services. The challenge will be to maintain this momentum and ensure that both new and experienced advisors are supported in their roles.

As the industry navigates this transformative phase, the focus will likely remain on attracting and retaining talent while also adapting to the evolving needs of travelers. The next few years could see a significant reshaping of the travel landscape, driven by both consumer demand and the capabilities of a new generation of travel advisors. With the right support and resources, the travel industry may not only recover from past challenges but also thrive in a new era of opportunity.
